Reflection:

In this project we made up a patients name, age, gender, height, and weight. We then had to record the patient’s information. We were also given two different prescriptions for that patient and had to use conversions to determine whether or not the doctor’s order was safe.

In the first prescription we used steps to convert the patient’s weight from pounds to kilograms, allowing us to use the information from the prescription to determine if the amount ordered was safe for the patient. After deciding that the amount order was in fact safe for the patient we had to use other conversion method to change milligrams to micrograms to determine the amount to administer.

In the second prescription we used the patient’s weight and height to find the BSA (body surface area) of the patient. We then used information from the prescription and the prescription label to determine an amount to administer.

I found this project to be very exciting, I enjoyed being able to see how all the different types of math I am learning will actually fit into the outside world. Sometimes when I am learning a new concept in math I cannot figure out why it is that I need to learn it. It is hard for me to understand where I will ever use it outside of that class room. This project took several different concepts and allowed me to apply them to a situation and am sure to encounter many times over after becoming a nurse. I see now that math will be a significant part of my duties when working with patients and their prescriptions.
