Masjed-e-Jomeh (The Friday Mosque)
1366
The Mosque is encapsulated in a small area of Isfahan. It is said that it holds as much "importance to a cathedral in a Christian city." Again the amount of time and skill it would have taken to construct such a building is unimaginable. The walls are decorated with so much detail it is hade to know where to look. The ceilings arch in every passage way hold just as much detail as the pillars surrounding them.

14th Century
This is a sanctuary that was often used for pray. If you look closely the entire, building looks to be constructed out of small bricks. The amount of time and skill it must have taken to construct such beautiful brick work must have taken years. The inside of the dome is by far more beautiful than the outside and has far more detail within the bricks. It stands in a cemetery south of a small village in Isfahan.

The Portal of Jorjir
10th Century
The Portal of Jorjir "is probably the oldest religious building in Isfahan." It was built between 1656-1662 by a doctor who was said to have taught in the area. The walls were preserved by covering them in mud until "The department of Antiquities uncovered them in 1956." Plaster was used as the original mosque for the building giving it its lasting "ivory tone." The building looks to have the most beautiful detail. Once inside the building there is a font to purify yourself before proceeding down the hallway and into the courtyard. Where prayer is conducted facing Mecca. I choose this building because I found the detail in the wall to be very beautiful.

The difference is that in Isfahan they make great use of what little space they have and can pack a very beautiful and functional building into to a tiny space. American culture on the other hand sees it as bigger is better. This building is huge and the land it occupies is much bigger. Together they cover an entire city block.
